Vertex accounts are anonymous by default and require no personal information. This page covers what we store, and how you can inspect or remove it.
Anonymous by Design
Vertex accounts are inherently anonymous. We do not require email addresses, phone numbers, or any personal information to use the free service. Your account is identified only by a randomly generated key and an optional alias that you choose. If you include personally identifiable information in your alias, that is your choice - we do not require or request it.
If you upgrade to a paid plan, our payment processor (Paddle) requires an email address for billing and receipts. Vertex does not use or store this email. See Paddle's privacy policy for how they handle your data.
Data We Store
URLs and Annotations
- URLs you choose to annotate (bookmarks you explicitly create)
- Notes you write for your annotations
- Page previews (title, description, thumbnail) for annotated URLs
MHTML Archives
- When you enable the "Archive content" option, we capture a snapshot of the full page as MHTML
- Archives include the page's HTML, CSS, images, and inline resources
- Archives are stored on our servers and associated with your account
- Archives of authenticated pages may contain personally identifiable information
- Unless shared, archives remain accessible only to you
API Request Logs
- We log API requests for debugging and to understand usage patterns
- Logs include request timestamps, endpoints accessed, and response status codes. Logs will never include your API keys and thus remain anonymous.
- We do not track your activity within the application beyond what is necessary for the service to function
We do not collect: browsing history, pages you visit without annotating, personal information beyond what you explicitly provide, or any data from pages you do not interact with through Vertex. Batch lookups on pages you browse are transient and never stored.
How We Use Your Data
- To provide the annotation and archiving service
- To sync your annotations across devices
- To display your saved content in the dashboard
- To generate graph visualizations of your annotations
- To display content you have chosen to publicly share
Data Storage and Security
- Archives are stored with your user account and not shared with others
- We use HTTPS for all data transmission
- Authentication uses secure HTTP-only cookies
Third-Party Services
The Vertex extension communicates only with our API servers (api.vertexapp.io). We do not share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
Your Rights
- Access: View all your annotations and archives in the dashboard
- Deletion: Delete individual annotations through the dashboard or extension
- Account deletion: Contact us to request complete account deletion
Browser Permissions
The extension requests the following permissions:
- storage: To save your preferences locally
- tabs: To detect the current page URL for annotation
- contextMenus: To provide right-click annotation options
- scripting: To display annotation indicators on pages
- webNavigation: To detect page navigation for updating indicators
- pageCapture: To create MHTML archives when you enable archiving
- webRequest: To detect when page resources finish loading before archiving
Content Scripts
Our content script runs on web pages to display indicators next to links you have annotated. It only reads link URLs to check against your saved annotations - it does not read or transmit any other page content unless you explicitly create an archive. These lookups are not stored on our servers and remain anonymous.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes through the extension or website.
